Ammonium Carbonate

Synonyms: Crystal ammonia; amonium sesquicarbonate; hartshorn.

Uses: Ammonium salts, medicine (expectorant), baking powders, smelling salts, fire-exstinguishing compounds, pharmaceuticals, textiles (mordant), fermentation accelerator in wine manufacture, organic chemicals, ceramics, washing wool.

Hazard:  Inhalation causes irritation of nose and throat. Ingestion may cause gastric irritation. Contact with eyes or skin causes irritation.  AMMONIUM CARBONATE decomposes when heated to give gaseous ammonia and gaseous carbon dioxide. Reaction is non-explosvie. Causes decomposition of sodium hypochlorite within a few seconds.
